“Fiddler on the Roof” opening night is today! If you do not have anything to do this weekend or next, make sure you get tickets and watch the show.

“Fiddler on the Roof” is a classic. In fact, the first time the show opened its curtains on Broadway was Sept. 22, 1964. Fiddler on the Roof has also won several Tony awards; some being “Best Original Score” and “Best Musical.”

The musical takes place in a fictional village in Russia called Anatevka during 1905. A man named Tevye has five daughters and is set on finding them good, traditional husbands, but things didn’t go to plan. Traditions end up being broken and freedom of choice and choosing the one you love spreads throughout the village. Since the family broke the traditions, Tevye’s family starts to encounter unfortunate luck. To find out how the family gets through the hard time, buy your tickets and watch the show!

Being apart of the musical can be a real time commitment and takes a lot of dedication. Many talented students spend hours working on choreography and memorizing lines. Even though it takes a lot of work, Sophomore J.J. Beck enjoys working on the musical after school. Beck plays Motel Kamzoil, a tailor who wants to marry one of Tevye’s daughters.

“It can sometimes be a little overwhelming, but for the most part it’s really fun,” Beck said. “It’s just a good thing to do after school and to forget about everything that happened during the day.”

Although the musical is a lot of tough work, there are fun moments. Beck shared that big dance numbers in the musical were a lot of fun, especially since the entire cast got together to do them. He also enjoyed putting everything together in the end.

“Fiddler on the Roof” offers a good story and message to the audience.

“It has a good message about family and traditions and getting away from all of that [traditions] while still keeping it [family] all tied together,” said Beck.

The “Fiddler on the Roof” cast performs Nov. 15, Nov. 16, and Nov. 17. As well as Nov. 22, Nov. 23, and Nov. 24. Tickets are available on mynorthtickets.com.
